Cable Diagonal Berlin Expansion: This badass expansion runs through northwest to Marzahn in the east, cutting right through the capital. A six-kilometer section between SS Reuter and Teufelsbruch in Berlin-Hakenfelde will be laid at depths of up to 40 meters. It's gonna be like drilling a massive four-meter diameter tunnel for these cables, replacing the existing route and boosting capacity by about 40%.
Cable Vertical Berlin South: This baby's a 14-kilometer tunnel. The starting shaft will be in Brandenburg near the Berlin city border in Großbeeren – just wait till you see it!
Cable Vertical Berlin North: This baby's a whopping 20 kilometers long, with 17 kilometers cruising underground. Commencing at SS Reuter, it connects a yet-to-be-built substation in the Tegel search area, blasts through to SS Malchow like nothing you've ever seen.
But, don't get too excited, folks. Though most of the work takes place underground, it won't be completely hassle-free for the residents. "Building in a high-density inner-city area is a technical challenge, and it demands a chat with all the relevant folks," Kapferer warned. "So, politics, lend us a hand – these energy transition projects are important, buddy!"
Awesome, right?! So, when can we expect these bad boys to start running? Construction begins gradually from 2030, and the staggered commissioning starts in 2036, wrapping up by the end of the 30s. Unfortunately, they ain't spilled the beans on exact construction costs yet, but with a multi-year investment plan, you know it ain't gonna be cheap!
