Unveiling of MPEG-5 LCEVC Licensing Initiatives by V-Nova, Aimed at Boosting TV 3.0 and Streaming Expansion

V-Nova, a leading video compression technology company, has announced the availability of two new licensing programs for its MPEG-5 LCEVC video enhancement technology. These programs are designed to support video distribution services and consumer device manufacturers.

Simplified Licensing for Video Services

The new licensing framework targets streaming and broadcast service providers, enabling them to incorporate MPEG-5 LCEVC to enhance video quality and reduce bandwidth consumption efficiently. This program is known as the Video Distribution Services Licensing.

Streamlined Adoption for Device Manufacturers

On the other hand, the Consumer Device Manufacturers Licensing program is aimed at device makers integrating MPEG-5 LCEVC decoding capabilities. This includes TV manufacturers, set-top box producers, and System-on-Chip (SoC) manufacturers. Notably, V-Nova has partnered with SoC manufacturers like Amlogic to include LCEVC as part of their TV SoCs, facilitating broader market adoption.

A Shift Towards Royalty-Based Model

There are no longer any free usage allowances for OEMs or service providers adopting LCEVC, marking a fundamental licensing policy change. This shift towards a royalty-based model establishes sustainable royalty revenues for V-Nova.

Flexible Approach to Ecosystem Needs

Royalty waivers are provided for certain cases, such as ATSC 3.0 over-the-air (OTA) broadcasts, to support broadcast transitions to NextGen TV standards. This flexible approach reflects V-Nova's commitment to supporting the needs of the ecosystem.

Key Benefits of MPEG-5 LCEVC

MPEG-5 LCEVC enhances any codec, reducing transcoding costs and energy consumption by up to 70%, and improving compression efficiency by as much as 40%. It adds an enhancement layer to any base video, enabling benefits such as scalable delivery of UHD and HD services and low-latency streaming.
