Vestas receives an order for a turbine on Nordlicht 1 project from our website
In a significant stride towards sustainable energy production, Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has secured a firm order for the Nordlicht 1 wind farm project in Germany. The project forms part of Vattenfall's broader efforts to expand renewable energy, contributing to Germany's goals for sustainable energy production.
Vestas will deliver 68 V236-15.0 MW wind turbines for the Nordlicht 1 wind farm, located 85 kilometres north of the island of Borkum in the German North Sea. Catrin Jung, Head of Business Unit Offshore at Vattenfall, stated that with Nordlicht, they are staying on course towards fossil freedom.
The Nordlicht 1 wind farm will feature 68 V236-15.0 MW wind turbines, with a combined installed capacity of 1 GW. The firm order for Vestas follows a conditional agreement with Vattenfall signed in June 2024.
The scope of the contract also includes a comprehensive five-year service and warranty agreement followed by a 25-year operational support agreement. Nils de Baar, President Vestas Northern & Central Europe, expressed delight in deploying the V236-15.0 MW wind turbines to Nordlicht 1 and delivering low-emission steel for the project.
TÜV SÜD has been commissioned to perform project certification for the implementation phase of both Nordlicht wind farms, which are located in the German North Sea. The certification process will cover the manufacturing, assembly, transportation, installation, and commissioning of the wind turbines, adhering to standards set by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH).
The construction of Nordlicht 1 is scheduled to start in 2026, with the wind turbines expected to be installed in 2027. Both Nordlicht wind farms, Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2, are expected to enter operation in 2028.
For the Nordlicht 2 phase, Vattenfall made a final investment decision on a conditional basis, pending the receipt of the necessary permit. The use of low-emission steel in the construction or components of the Nordlicht wind farms is yet to be confirmed in the recent updates.
The combined installed capacity of both Nordlicht wind farms is 1.6 GW, making a significant contribution to Germany's renewable energy capacity. As the world continues to grapple with climate change, projects like Nordlicht are a testament to the potential of renewable energy to power a sustainable future.
