Viasat & Space42 Launch Equatys for D2D Services in 3 Years
Viasat and Space42, members of the Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA), have launched Equatys, a joint venture aiming to provide direct-to-device (D2D) services within three years. The initiative pools their Mobile Satellite Services spectrum and is open to other operators, aiming to accelerate deployment timelines.
Equatys boasts over 100 megahertz of L- and S-band spectrum, allocated across more than 160 countries. It's designed to accommodate future spectrum needs and employs a modular supply chain approach for continuous technology upgrades. The venture aims to integrate Low Earth Orbit (LEO) with existing Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) infrastructure, leveraging both for services.
The announcement follows SpaceX's recent multibillion-dollar deal with EchoStar for D2D connectivity from LEO. Equatys positions itself as a republic services-friendly alternative, committing to work within national spectrum allocations and closely with countries. It will adopt a cell tower-like investment model and a partner-led funding framework to lower unit costs and attract investors.
Viasat and Space42's Equatys venture seeks to provide D2D services within three years, integrating LEO and GEO infrastructure. It's open to other operators and aims to be country-friendly, working closely with countries and adopting a cost-effective investment model.
