SimpleShow: Comic-Style Explainer Videos for Complex Issues

SimpleShow GmbH, a company with roots in Stuttgart, Berlin, London, New York, and Singapore, has been providing corporate clients with explanatory videos for the past five years. Founded in 2008 by Jens Schmelzle, Adrian Thoma, and Kai Blisch, the company started as a humble startup in a basement.

SimpleShow's unique selling point lies in its black and white comic-style animated videos, created using a lego technique. These videos are easily digestible for people of various origins, including illiterates, due to their focus on symbolism rather than text. The company offers clients the option to customize desired videos both stylistically and in color.

The main goal of these videos is to convey information clearly and effectively in a maximum of three minutes. SimpleShow's services come with a flat rate of approximately 8,000 euros per three minutes, including complete service and usage rights.

SimpleShow competes with services like Explainity, HQ Know Motion, infotainweb, and anastrophic. While HQ Know Motion challenges SimpleShow on its own start page, claiming to offer "more than just a simple show!", SimpleShow remains steadfast in its mission to present complex issues in an understandable way for various industries.

Audio-visual learners easily absorb the information presented in these videos, making them an effective tool for corporate communication. SimpleShow employs 50 permanent staff and has its own academy where concept creators and producers are trained and certified to maintain the quality of the videos for different clients.

The videos are created using drawings, voice-overs, and music, with the movement of figures and objects achieved with real hands, not automatic animations. Since SimpleShow's founding in 2008, other companies have followed suit, offering animated explainer videos in comic style with LEGO-like techniques by using stop-motion animation with LEGO bricks, custom LEGO minifigures, and 3D animation software to mimic LEGO aesthetics.

The annual turnover of SimpleShow is in the mid-seven-figure range and is growing continuously by about 100 percent per year. The company finances itself solely from cash flow and boasts prestigious clients such as Microsoft, Mercedes Benz, and Postbank. Despite its success, SimpleShow remains committed to its mission of making complex issues understandable for all.
