Volkswagen Group Dominates European Electric Vehicle Market in First Half of 2025

The Volkswagen Group has solidified its position as the leading manufacturer of pure electric vehicles (BEVs) in Europe, according to data from the first half of 2025. The German automaker, which already held the top spot on the EU market, saw a 3.8% increase in BEV deliveries compared to the same period in 2024.

This growth, however, comes in the face of stiff competition from Chinese manufacturer BYD, which has significantly boosted its BEV sales in Europe this year. BYD tripled its deliveries in July alone, surpassing Tesla and indicating a strong challenge in the European BEV market.

The rise in BEV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) deliveries demonstrates an increasing demand for modern electric and hybrid solutions. BEV orders specifically jumped by over 60%, while PHEV deliveries for the Volkswagen Group rose by 41%.

The Volkswagen Group's success can be attributed to its successful model offensive, which includes popular electric vehicles such as the Volkswagen ID.4/ID.5, ID.3, Audi Q4 e-tron, and Škoda Enyaq. New models like the VW ID.7 Tourer, CUPRA Terramar, and Audi Q6 e-tron have also seen strong consumer demand.

Europe was a key growth driver for the Volkswagen Group's BEV deliveries, with an 89% surge in the region. The company delivered 4.41 million vehicles globally by the end of June 2025, marking a 1.3% rise year-on-year. The Volkswagen Group increased its global deliveries of all-electric vehicles by 47% during the first half of 2025, totaling 465,500 units worldwide.

Incoming orders across all drive types in Western Europe saw a healthy 19% increase, with one in five vehicles delivered by the Volkswagen Group during the first half of 2025 being purely electric. The company remains committed to shaping the future of mobility through continuous investment in electric and autonomous driving technologies.

Gains in South America (+18%) and Europe (+2%) significantly offset expected declines in other regions, ensuring the Volkswagen Group's position as the clear BEV market leader in Europe, commanding approximately 28% market share. The company's dominance in the European BEV market is a testament to its commitment to sustainable mobility and its ability to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles.
